I have to admit that Hungarian Telekom (formerly MATAV) has never been one of my favorite companies. As a long-term Budapest resident, I still remember the days when MATAV held a monopoly on telecoms services. When competition finally kicked in, I was pleased to take my business elsewhere.
True, the company was one of the first regional telcos to privatize. Following the lead of its corporate master, Deutsche Telekom, MATAV rapidly modernized the nation’s ailing communications infrastructure. However, just like the Germans, the Hungarian company was also quick to raise its rates in order to recoup the investment. Today, I’m pleased to say I don’t pay a penny to Hungarian Telekom. However, all my friends have iPhones and I want one too. The trouble is, you guessed it, HT has an exclusive agreement with Apple for the iPhone.
Needless to say, I was somewhat shocked to see that Hungarian Telekom got top marks in mobile broadbrand. Here’s what Rethink Wireless had to say:
In a comprehensive study of the mobile broadband network performance of mobile carriers around the world, ARCchart reveals that T-Mobile Hungary has the best overall performing 3G network, supporting average download and upload data speeds of 1,605 kbps and 194 kbps respectively, and an average latency of 212 milliseconds. The carrier’s download throughput is almost 60% higher than the average for all UMTS carriers worldwide.
Surely this doesn’t include the Asian carriers?
