Gate2Start help for ICT researchers

Gate2Start is a name of another Framework Programme project focused on the ICT sector and technology transfer. It is a part of the broader Europe Innova initiative addressing the exploitation of research-based innovation and bringing entrepreneurship and market expertise at the start of applied research.

Several coaching and networking events were run in several countries over last two years and there have been also developed some outputs the CITT and NowEurope community can benefit from.

Confessions of a tech transfer newbie

I’d like to about hear your experiences with technology transfer. I’m addressing this request to the nowEurope contributors circle, many of whom I have only recently met. My experience has mainly been with small, entrepreneurial startups in Internet media.

However, I do recall that some fifteen years ago when I used a text interface to navigate the Internet through the Siemens Data-P network I discovered a Hungarian professor who had a working copy of Mosiac, the first primitive web browser. His student later told me the professor had refused to post a copy of Mosiac on the open university for others to use.

CITT: Add “Technology Transfer” to Europe’s vocabulary!

I am pleased to be able to contribute for the first time to a new nowEurope issue that so far has been quite underestimated in some European countries: Technology transfer, in particular in ICT.

The core business of CITT is to devise a strategy to establish and get running a viable cooperation between the ICT industry and research. Although a lot has been done recently on national and EU levels, Europe still gives away too much technology and know how to competing markets.

The plant bears its flowers in clusters

Let me continue to post some remarks to the previous notes on the new initiative the “Centrope ICT technology transfer” which broadens the variety of activities taking place in the so called “Centrope region”. The region accounts for about six million inhabitants.

Why and how did it all start? The CITT project was initiated by the Vienna IT Enterprises Platform of the Vienna Business Agency more than a year ago. VITE is the network for IT companies, research-, development- and educational institutions which have their seat in Vienna. The main goals of VITE is raising awareness for the value of cooperation and implementing existing skills and ideas to initiatives.

Survey One results: Companies interested in applying for FP6

As part of the NETIES project, we have conducted a survey of small and medium sized enterprises interested in participating in Sixth Framework funded projects. This survey was carried out in Hungary, in parallel with our colleagues in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

This research was conducted in two parts. The first survey, summarized here, collected information from companies and organizations interested in taking part in an FP6 funded project. The second survey researched those who had previously taken part in a project.

One insight of this survey is that two-thirds of respondents (64%) had little or no knowledge about the FP6 programme, while 56% were interested in receiving information online.

Survey Two results: Companies which have successfully applied for FP6 support

As part of the NETIES project, we have conducted a survey of small and medium sized enterprises interested in participating in Sixth Framework funded projects. This survey was carried out in Hungary, in parallel with our colleagues in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

This research was conducted in two parts. The first survey gathered information from companies and organizations interested in taking part in an FP6 funded project. The second survey, summarized here, researched those who had previously taken part in a project.

One insight of this survey is the high level of satisfaction among Hungarian companies taking part in FP6. Nearly one third of companies (29%) rated their FP6 participation a ‘four’ on an ascending value scale of one to four, while 48% gave it a ‘three’. A full 90% agreed they would do it all over again, if given the chance.

A total of 39 companies took part in this survey, which was carried out in partnership with the Hungarian Association of IT Companies (IVSZ).

Czech Republic: SMEs with experience in FP6

Within the FP6 experience survey lasting for 18 months, we have got 55 completed questionnaires so far. In fact, respondents can be divided into thirds. One third of respondents is formed by microfirms of up to 10 employees. Another third is represented by small firms with 11-50 employees and the last third falls for medium-sized companies with 51-250 employees.

It is evident from survey results that four fifths of companies have been invited to a project by a coordinator or another partner of a project consortium. Only one third of companies involved in the survey actively searched for partners and 24 % of them initiated a project. About one fourth of respondents belongs among experienced project applicants whose rate of success reaches 75 and more % of funded projects. On the other hand, one fourth of companies succeeds only with every third or more project proposal.

Czech Republic: SMEs interested in applying for FP6

We addressed over 1000 companies active in the knowledge economy area, mostly from information and communication technology and biotechnology industries. 122 of them participated in some FP projects.

Altogether 212 companies filled in the questionnaire. Nearly one half (46%) was represented by small firms with 11-50 employees, one third (35%) of respondents was formed by microfirms of up to 10 employees and the rest was medium-sized companies with 51-250 employees. Nearly half the companies concerned stated they were FP beginners (44%), some had a theoretical overview (32%) and about a quarter had also a practical experience (24%).

New prospects for electronics manufacturing SMEs in the EU-15

Reverting to the various approaches for succeeding in FP projects presented or underlined in the last weeks, let me draw your attention on two criteria: scientific excellence and project relevance.

The case study proposed below shows how seven SMEs have succeeded in taking and responding to their contemporary societal and industrial challenges through an ambitious cooperative project (FLEX-EMAN).

This project’s context is characterised by the following statement: the electronics manufacturing sector has seen significant changes over the past two years. Besides, the extensive development of IT and electronics markets have resulted in the creation of multinational manufacturing service providers, the migration of volume operations to low-cost locations outside the EU and in the evolution of manufacturing technology only suited to high volume production.
