Today I would like to present you one Viennese research institution and one company (Competence Center) successfully involved in R&D-activities. Both of them are quite important for our city.
These two organizations have an excellent international reputation and both of them are running successful cross-border projects and have finalized some very interesting ones in the past.
Austrian Research Centers (ARC) stands for Austria’s largest non-university research institution. Beside areas such as biomedical engineering, light metals, nano technology, and many more to cite, ARC have also established a powerful IT-division, “smart systems”. smart systems is specialised in a variety of research-topics such as:
· High speed picture processing, video and security technology
· Quantum technology, optoelectronic engineering
· Intelligent antennas, high-frequency engineering, secured mobile communication

Zentrum für virtual reality und visualisierung forschung-gmbH (VRVis) is one of the leading Austrian R&D-companies in the area of virtual reality and visualisation. VRVis is also part of Europe’s second-largest research group in the field of computer graphics – and this group is also situated in Vienna.
In the research areas VRVis has specialised in, they offer research on demand as well as consulting and product-development, and they also do basic and applied research. That way the company has become a successful intermediary between business and research.

concerning the question of Steven, I can offer the following information:
- VRVis is a research company, therefore we are not specialized in specific products. We are offering research and development solutions for our company partners. Our fields of expertise are Visualization and Rendering (basically transforming large amounts of data into pictures, useful for different user-groups.
- “Products” and “Applications” from VRVis range from software for the interactive visual analysis of large simulation data to the interactive rendering of whole cities combined from different data sources.
- VRVis has also created a spin-off, namely SimVis (www.simvis.at)
- It is hard to estimate the value created by VRVis, as we develop solutions for industrial partners, who in turn use our research results to implement products.
